How it works
It begins with a conversation. Tell us when you would like to travel, how many days you have, who is coming and what you most hope to see, and our team in Arusha will put together a draft itinerary with the parks, lodges and driving times that make sense for the season.
We then refine it with you until it feels right: adding a night here, swapping a lodge there, or slowing the pace for children or keen photographers. Once you are happy, we take care of park permits, accommodation and transfers.
On the ground, your guide meets you on arrival and stays with you throughout the safari. Our office in Arusha remains on hand for the whole trip, so any change of plan is handled quickly and locally.
You travel in a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing and photography, driven by your own experienced guide. The vehicle is yours for the whole safari, so you set the pace and never share a sighting with strangers.
Choose the level of comfort that suits you. Silver offers comfortable, well-located lodges and tented camps; Gold steps up to more spacious, characterful properties; Platinum brings the finest luxury camps and lodges in prime wildlife areas.
Add a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti, a guided walking safari, a canoe trip or a visit to a Maasai village, Hadzabe hunter-gatherers or the market town of Mto wa Mbu. We will suggest what fits your route and season.
Nothing is fixed until it suits you. Travel dates, length, parks, pace and budget are all yours to decide, and we can combine your safari with a Kilimanjaro climb or a few days on the beaches of Zanzibar.

Season guide
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but each month has its own character. The long dry season from June to October brings the easiest game viewing, as animals gather around rivers and waterholes and the bush thins out. Late January and February is calving season on the southern Serengeti plains. The long rains usually arrive in late March and ease off in late May, bringing quieter parks, lush green landscapes and excellent birdwatching. Use the guide below to find the month that suits you best.
JANUARY
After the short rains, the Great Migration settles on the green short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area. Towards the end of the month the first wildebeest calves are born. The landscapes are lush, the light is clear and migratory birds are present in good numbers.
FEBRUARY
February is the peak of the calving season in the southern Serengeti, when huge numbers of wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks. Lions, cheetahs and hyenas follow the herds closely, so predator action can be remarkable. It is one of the most rewarding months of the year for a northern circuit safari.
MARCH
The herds and their young calves remain on the southern plains, gradually preparing to move as the grass is grazed down. The long rains usually begin towards the end of the month. Parks are quieter and the scenery is at its greenest, though some tracks can become muddy.
APRIL
April is the heart of the long rains, and some roads and remote camps are affected. The migration starts to drift north-west from the southern plains towards the central Serengeti. Resident wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara is still easy to see, and you may have sightings almost to yourself.
MAY
The long rains normally ease off in the second half of May. Long columns of wildebeest and zebra move through the central Serengeti towards the Western Corridor, and the rutting season begins. The country is green and fresh, and late May can offer good value before the busier months.
JUNE
The dry season sets in and game viewing improves quickly as vegetation thins and animals stay close to water. The migration is usually in the Western Corridor, where the herds face their first river crossings at the Grumeti. Bring a warm layer for early morning drives.
JULY
July is one of the best months to see the Great Migration, as the herds push into the northern Serengeti and the first Mara River crossings often begin. Wildlife concentrates around permanent water across the northern circuit, and Tarangire starts to fill with elephants. This is high season, so it pays to book early.
AUGUST
The migration is spread across the northern Serengeti, with dramatic Mara River crossings a real possibility on any given day. Tarangire is at its best, with large elephant herds gathering along the river. The popular parks are busy, so a well-planned route makes a real difference.
SEPTEMBER
The herds remain in the northern Serengeti and river crossings continue, often with slightly fewer vehicles than in August. Across the northern and southern circuits the bush is dry and open, making predators and big game easy to find. It is also an excellent month for Ruaha and Nyerere in the south.
OCTOBER · this month
Wildlife viewing is still superb as animals stay close to the remaining water. The migration lingers in the northern Serengeti before starting to turn south as the short rains approach. Visitor numbers begin to fall, making this a lovely month for a quieter safari.
NOVEMBER
The short rains refresh the land and the migration travels south through the eastern and central Serengeti towards the southern plains. Showers are usually brief, so most days still offer plenty of time for game drives. Migratory birds arrive and the parks are calm and green.
DECEMBER
The herds return to the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, where fresh grass sustains them ahead of the calving season. The landscapes are lush and full of young animals and birdlife. The festive period is popular, so plan ahead if you are travelling over Christmas and New Year.

Every safari can be built at one of three accommodation levels, and you can mix them within a single trip. Silver features comfortable, well-run lodges and tented camps in good locations, ideal if you would rather spend more on extra days in the parks. Gold offers more space, character and service, often in quieter settings or closer to the wildlife. Platinum brings together the finest luxury camps and lodges in prime locations, with exceptional food, design and attention to detail. Whatever you choose, we only work with properties we know well and trust.
Packing list
Safari packing is all about comfortable, practical layers in neutral colours. Mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, especially from June to August and on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, while the middle of the day is warm and bright. Soft-sided bags are easiest to fit into the vehicle and onto light aircraft.
