Tour overview

Untamed southern parks, then the slow rhythm of the Spice Island.

Cross the wild lands of Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park, then trade the bush for the blue waters of the Indian Ocean and lie back on Zanzibar's dazzling white sand. This journey refreshes the soul and stirs the emotions, and is designed for keen safari-goers, nature lovers, families, groups and honeymooners who believe travel is about seeing, hearing, feeling and tasting the difference.

Both parks are rich in plants and wildlife, and both are blissfully uncrowded. In Nyerere, the former Selous, you spend four nights with game drives, walking and boating safaris, a bonfire bush dinner and a hot-air balloon safari. In Ruaha, Tanzania's second-largest park, four nights bring you lion, vast elephant herds, greater kudu and the rare African wild dog in pristine, little-visited country – the real Africa.

A light-aircraft flight then carries you to Zanzibar for five nights at a beach resort on full board. Your stay includes a Stone Town tour, a spice tour, Jozani Forest, Changuu Island, a Mnemba Island excursion and a sunset cruise from Nungwi – with plenty of time left simply to slow down and enjoy the island.

Day01Arrival in Dar es Salaam and transfer to Nyerere National Park NyerereLunch & dinner

Your safari begins in Dar es Salaam. A member of the Gip-Adventure Tours & Safaris team meets you at 07:00 at Julius Nyerere International Airport, or collects you from your hotel in the city, and you set off by road for Nyerere National Park – the vast southern wilderness carved out of the great Selous Game Reserve, some 235 km from Dar es Salaam at Mtemere Gate. A packed lunch travels with you.

On reaching your lodge, relax after the drive and dive into the swimming pool to wash off the dust of the road. A late-afternoon boating excursion on the river can be arranged. Your lodge lies within the park itself, and at night you fall asleep to the sounds of the wild – groans and barks, roars and howls, chirps and chatter.

Dinner and overnight at your lodge inside Nyerere National Park.
