Big 5 Safaris

Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino: safaris planned around the parks where you have the best chance of seeing all five.

The "Big Five" were named by hunters as the five most dangerous animals to track on foot. Today they are the five animals most travellers dream of photographing: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

Our Big Five safaris are built around the parks where your chances are highest. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Africa to see black rhino, the Serengeti is famous for lions and leopards, and Tarangire for its elephant herds. With an experienced guide and enough time, seeing all five on one trip is very likely.

Every itinerary is an example: we tailor the days, parks and lodges to you.

Where to see the Big Five

  • Ngorongoro Crater: all five in a single day is possible, including black rhino on the open crater floor.
  • Serengeti: lions, leopards in the Seronera river valley, elephants and buffalo.
  • Tarangire: some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania, especially in the dry season.
  • Masai Mara and Ol Pejeta (Kenya): big cats and rhinos.

Tips for spotting all five

Choose at least four or five days on safari, include the Ngorongoro Crater for rhino, and spend full days in the Serengeti for leopard. Leopards are the hardest to find: patience and a good guide make the difference.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still wondering about something? Our team in Arusha answers every message personally.

How many days do I need to see the Big Five?

Four to five days covering the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti give you an excellent chance. Even a three-day safari to Tarangire and Ngorongoro can find four or five.

Is the Big Five guaranteed?

Wildlife is wild, so no honest operator can guarantee sightings. But with the right parks and time, most of our guests see all five.

When is the best time for a Big Five safari?

June to October, when vegetation is thin and animals gather near water. The Ngorongoro Crater is excellent all year.
