Six days following the herds from Seronera to the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, rounded off with the Ngorongoro Crater.
- Central & Northern Serengeti
- 6 Days / 5 Nights
- Private Safari
Tour overview
Two days on the banks of the Mara River, where the migration's greatest drama unfolds.
Embark on a thrilling six-day wildebeest migration safari. Each year more than two million wildebeest, zebra and Thomson's gazelle plod northwards from the southern plains of the Serengeti towards Kenya's Masai Mara, covering over 800 km in search of fresh, nutritious grazing – and when they are simply on the move, they form single-file columns up to 40 km long.
Danger shadows them every step of the way. The apex predators of the plains live lives inextricably linked with the migration, the Nile crocodiles wait in the rivers, and the old, lame and exhausted are taken by spotted hyenas, jackals and vultures. Still the herds never retreat: they were born to move.
Your safari crosses the Ngorongoro highlands to Olduvai Gorge and a Maasai boma, spends a night at Seronera in the central Serengeti, then heads north for two days near the Mara and Grumeti rivers, where the chances of seeing the herds plunge into the water are high. You finish with a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. The best time for this safari is from early June to late October.

Day02Serengeti National Park (Central) via Olduvai Gorge and a Maasai boma
After breakfast at around 08:00, your guide will collect you for the drive to the Serengeti through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop to visit and explore Olduvai Gorge and the Olduvai Museum – one of the world's most important archaeological sites, rich in evidence of prehistoric man and the creatures that lived here millions of years ago.
Continue to a Maasai boma to immerse yourself in the real essence of Maasai culture and learn about their way of life, followed by a hearty picnic lunch.
Then press on into the Serengeti with game viewing along the way, watching the sun set over the plains before you reach your camp at Seronera in the central part of the park. Dinner and your first night in the African wilderness await.

Day03Northern Serengeti – the migration and the Mara River
After breakfast at around 08:00, head for the northern part of the park for a memorable day of game driving. The northern Serengeti is famed for its sheer wealth of ungulates – more than two million wildebeest, zebra and antelope roaming rolling hills that undulate gently towards the Kenyan border, punctuated by spectacular kopjes, open grasslands, acacia woodland and the riverine forest that lines the great Mara and Grumeti rivers.
Savour every moment in this corner of the park, with a picnic lunch out in the wilderness. Near the rivers there is a good chance of seeing the herds gathering on the banks or plunging into the crocodile-filled waters. Please bear in mind that a crossing is always a matter of luck: the animals organise themselves entirely by instinct, and no one can predict exactly when they will go.
Dinner and overnight at your camp in the northern Serengeti.

Day04Northern Serengeti – a second day with the herds
A second full day in the north gives you the best possible chance of being at the right place when the herds decide to move. After an early breakfast, your guide will follow the latest reports to the crossing points along the Mara and Grumeti rivers.
Watch the vast columns of wildebeest and zebra gathering, the nervous milling on the riverbank and – with luck – the dramatic rush into the water, while the predators that shadow the migration are never far away. Lunch is a picnic in the bush.
Return to your camp in the northern Serengeti for dinner and a second night in this remarkable corner of the park.

Day05Ngorongoro Crater and drive to Karatu
After breakfast at around 08:00, your guide will collect you for the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with game viewing along the way. Descend to the floor of the majestic Ngorongoro Crater, a huge volcanic caldera with a permanent water supply that supports a remarkable variety of animal and plant life.
Enjoy the wild, natural beauty of one of the world's great wildlife sanctuaries, with a picnic lunch on the crater floor, before a short final game drive.
Then climb out of the crater and continue to your lodge in Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day06Karatu to Kilimanjaro Airport and departure
After a hearty breakfast at your lodge at around 08:00, and depending on your flight schedule, your safari driver guide will collect you in Karatu and transfer you comfortably by road to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your international flight home.
This is the end of your safari – or, if you would like more, you can extend your trip to the beautiful, dazzling white-sand beaches of Zanzibar. The whole Gip Adventure team wishes you a safe journey home, full of long-lasting memories.
