Tour overview
Four parks, four stories, and the buffalo herds that tie them together.
This six-day buffalo safari begins with a warm welcome from your driver-guide and is carefully designed for anyone with a strong passion for wildlife who wants to explore four of northern Tanzania's parks in style: climbers fresh from Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, travellers flying in from Zanzibar, or anyone with a love of adventure but limited time.
Whether you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, or are collected from your hotel in Arusha, you will discover the beauty of unspoilt nature: the power of distant lion roars at night, the booming calls of ostriches and the chirrup of crickets close around you, and the solitude and stirring mix of sights, sounds and smells that make the African wilderness so special.
You travel through Arusha National Park, Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara in turn, each with its own beauty and its own story, and with large herds of buffalo a recurring sight along the way.

Day01Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Arusha
Your driver-guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport, or any other arrival point, welcomes you to Tanzania and drives you comfortably to your hotel in Arusha, where you can recover from the journey. Later you are briefed on the safari ahead.
Enjoy the tranquil surroundings and the real African atmosphere, with panoramic views of the rugged peaks of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest volcanic mountain, on clear days. Savour a well-prepared dinner and your first night.

Day02Arusha National Park and drive to Tarangire
After breakfast, your guide collects you at around 08:00 for Arusha National Park, a small, magnificent 'pocket park' with a wealth of attractions. Visit the magical fig tree arch, explore the savannas and the alkaline Momella Lakes, and take in panoramic views of Mount Meru, which rises some 70 km west of its sister mountain, Kilimanjaro.
For bird lovers it is a paradise, with Narina trogons and turacos among many other species, and black-and-white colobus monkeys lounging in the trees with their long white tails dangling from the branches. After a picnic lunch, a short game drive leads you on to your lodge in Tarangire National Park for dinner and the night.

Day03Tarangire National Park and drive to Karatu
After breakfast at around 08:00, you game drive through Tarangire National Park, a magnificent 2,850-square-kilometre park about 120 km south-west of Arusha, famous for the animals that gather along the Tarangire River, the main source of water in the dry season. The river winds for about 120 km through the park before emptying into Lake Burunge.
Watch for buffalo and elephant herds, and with luck a small pack of African painted dogs patrolling the bush, elusive kudu in the thickets and shy eland watching from a distance. After a picnic lunch and a short game drive, continue to your lodge in the small, dusty town of Karatu for dinner and the night.

Day04Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast at around 08:00, you drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend to the majestic crater floor. With water all year round, the crater supports a remarkable variety of wildlife: large herds of buffalo, dazzles of zebras, pods of hippos, big-tusked elephants and dark-maned lions in their prime, as well as the ostrich, the world's largest and fastest flightless bird.
Savour every moment on the crater floor and enjoy a picnic lunch, then take a short game drive out to your lodge in Karatu for dinner and the night.

Day05Lake Manyara National Park and return to Arusha
After breakfast at around 08:00, you drive to Lake Manyara National Park, tucked at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. It is famed for its rare tree-climbing lions, its evergreen groundwater forest and some of Africa's largest recorded troops of olive baboons, and it has a long, high canopy walkway that takes you close to nature. Permanent springs flow from the foot of the escarpment, fed by water from the crater highlands seeping through the porous rock.
The park is also rich in birds and animals. After a picnic lunch, you drive back to your hotel in Arusha for dinner and your final night.

Day06Departure from Kilimanjaro Airport
After a hearty breakfast, and depending on your flight time, your driver-guide transfers you comfortably by road to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your international flight home.
This marks the end of your buffalo safari. From all of us at Gip Adventure, we wish you a safe journey home full of lasting memories.
