Tour overview

Stripes on the savanna, from the Tarangire River to the shores of Lake Manyara.

This zebra safari begins with a warm welcome from your driver-guide and is crafted for anyone with a real passion for wildlife who wants to see northern Tanzania's finest game parks in style: climbers fresh from Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru, travellers flying in from Zanzibar, or anyone with a love of adventure but limited time.

After you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, or are collected from your hotel in Arusha, you set out to explore Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and finally Lake Manyara National Park.

Along the way you will see dazzles of plains zebra alongside wildebeest, elephants, lions and buffalo, a remarkable variety of plant life and some truly breathtaking landscapes, from Tarangire's river valley to the crater floor and the forests at the foot of the Rift Valley wall.

Day02Tarangire National Park and drive to Karatu KaratuBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After a hearty breakfast, your guide collects you at around 08:00 for the drive to Tarangire National Park, a magnificent 2,850-square-kilometre park about 120 km south-west of Arusha. It is famous for its game viewing in the dry months, when most of its animals gather along the Tarangire River, which winds for some 120 km through the park before emptying into Lake Burunge.

You will see many species, and if you are lucky a small pack of rare African painted dogs patrolling the bush, elusive kudu in the thickets and shy eland watching motionless from a distance. After a picnic lunch, a short game drive takes you out of the park towards the small, dusty town of Karatu and your lodge for dinner and the night.

Day03Ngorongoro Crater KaratuBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast at around 08:00, you drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend to the crater floor. With water all year round, the crater supports a remarkable variety of wildlife: big-tusked elephants, dark-maned lions in their prime, huge concentrations of buffalo, dazzles of plains zebra with wildebeest and warthogs, and the ostrich, the world's largest and fastest-running flightless bird, among many other birds.

Savour the panoramic views and varied habitats of this great natural sanctuary over a picnic lunch, then take a short game drive out of the crater and back to your lodge in Karatu for dinner and the night, reliving the day's adventures.

Day04Lake Manyara National Park and return to Arusha ArushaBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast at around 08:00, you drive to Lake Manyara National Park, tucked at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. It is famed for its tree-climbing lions, its evergreen groundwater forest and some of Africa's largest recorded troops of olive baboons, and it has a long, high treetop canopy walkway. Permanent springs flow from the foot of the escarpment, fed by water from the Ngorongoro highlands seeping through the porous rock.

Birdlife is rich, with thousands of pink flamingos feeding gently in the shallows of 'Africa's loveliest lake', making it ideal for bird lovers. After a picnic lunch and a short game drive, you return to your hotel in Arusha for dinner and the night.
