7-Day Southern Circuit: Mikumi, Udzungwa & Ruaha
Three of southern Tanzania's finest parks in one week: Mikumi's floodplains, the rainforest and waterfalls of Udzungwa, and the untamed wilderness of Ruaha.

Tour overview
Floodplains, rainforest waterfalls and the great wilderness of Ruaha.
Combining Mikumi, Udzungwa Mountains and Ruaha National Parks gives you a true feeling of being in the wild. These are celebrated yet remarkably uncrowded destinations, leaving you ample time to commune with the environment – its wildlife, its plants, its varied habitats and its rivers, lakes and changing terrain.
The journey begins with the open horizons of Mikumi, the national park closest to Dar es Salaam, where the Mkata floodplain teems with grazing herds. From there you head for the forested slopes of the Udzungwa Mountains, a park made for walkers, with a half-day trail to the Sanje Waterfalls as it plunges 170 metres through misty spray into the valley below. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here, along with primates found nowhere else on Earth.
The second half of the safari belongs to Ruaha, Tanzania's second-largest national park, named after the Great Ruaha River that flows along its eastern border. Ruaha holds more greater kudu than any other protected area in East Africa – the kudu is the park's emblem – along with more than 10% of Africa's remaining wild lions, one of the world's largest populations of endangered African wild dogs and great parades of elephants. Three nights here give you time to explore it properly before the return drive to Dar es Salaam.

Day02Mikumi National Park
After a hearty breakfast at around 08:00, set out on a full day of game viewing in Mikumi. The park's open horizons and abundant wildlife stretch from the Mkata floodplain across the grassy plains, dotted with tall termite mounds, where great herds of large herbivores move across the landscape.
Lunch is taken at a picnic site in the park. Afterwards there is time for a shorter afternoon game drive before you return to your camp for dinner and overnight.

Day03Udzungwa Mountains National Park
After breakfast at around 08:00, drive the 65 km from Mikumi to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park (some 350 km from Dar es Salaam). Udzungwa is a magnet for hikers, with an excellent network of forest trails, including the popular half-day ramble to the Sanje Waterfalls, which plunge 170 metres through a misty spray into the forested valley below.
Birders are drawn to this beautiful park too, with more than 400 bird species recorded alongside a fascinating variety of mammals. Enjoy lunch at a picnic site, followed by a shorter afternoon hike, then continue to your lodge close to the Udzungwa forest, where the climate is fresh and cool, for dinner and overnight.
