Tour overview

Begin married life among Tanzania's greatest wildlife spectacles.

Discover Tanzania's splendour on this luxury honeymoon safari through three of the country's most celebrated parks. It begins with a romantic meet-and-greet at Kilimanjaro International Airport and a peaceful first night in Arusha, in the shadow of Mount Meru, before you head out into the wild together.

First comes Tarangire National Park, with its year-round parades of savanna elephants, giant baobab trees, excellent birdlife and healthy population of predators – while eagles and vultures soar overhead or squabble over a carcass left behind by lions. Next, the endless plains of the Serengeti, its rolling acacia-dotted landscape home to one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife left on earth. Finally, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera, to see its landscapes, habitats and wildlife up close. Along the way you will also step into Maasai culture and learn about the local way of life.

For a honeymoon, the best months are January, February and July to December, when the weather is at its driest and the sun-baked plains deliver exceptional game viewing. March, April, May and early June bring the long rains and wildlife viewing is not at its best, so we do not recommend these months for a honeymoon – although you are of course welcome to travel then if you wish.

Day01Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Arusha ArushaDinner

Your honeymoon begins the moment you land. At Kilimanjaro International Airport, or any other arrival point, a member of the Gip Adventure team welcomes you to Tanzania with a romantic meet-and-greet before a safe, comfortable road transfer to your lodge in Arusha.

Our safari coordinators give you a short briefing on the days ahead, and then the afternoon is yours. Stroll through the lodge's peaceful gardens, unwind after the long journey and look out for the rugged peaks of majestic Mount Meru rising above the town.

Dinner is served at the lodge, followed by your first night in Tanzania.

Day02Tarangire National Park and drive to Karatu KaratuBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast at around 08:00, your safari driver-guide collects you for the drive to Tarangire National Park, a magnificent wildlife sanctuary of 2,850 sq km lying some 120 km south-west of Arusha.

Tarangire is famous for outstanding game viewing in the dry season, when animals from every corner of the park gather along the great Tarangire River – their main source of water at that time of year. The river runs for around 120 km from the Kondoa highlands in Dodoma Region, central Tanzania, meandering through the park before emptying into Lake Burunge. Expect to see a wide variety of wildlife moving freely in its natural environment, beneath the park's enormous baobab trees.

After a hearty picnic lunch in the park, enjoy a final, thrilling game drive before heading to your lodge in the small, dusty town of Karatu for dinner and a restful night.

Day03Serengeti National Park Central SerengetiBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast at around 08:00, your safari driver-guide collects you in Karatu and you head up through the Ngorongoro highlands towards Serengeti National Park, where you will spend the next two nights. The Maasai boma cultural visit included in your safari can be made along the way, giving you a glimpse of traditional Maasai life.

Once in the Serengeti, venture deep into the park on your first game drives. Famous for its green carpet in the wet season and its golden carpet in the dry, it offers serene surroundings and some of the finest wildlife viewing in Africa, with the Big Five and great herds of zebra and wildebeest roaming the plains.

Lunch is enjoyed out in the park, and the evening brings a delicious dinner and your first night at your camp in the African bush.

Day04Serengeti National Park: full day of game drives Central SerengetiBreakfast, lunch & dinner

Spend a whole day exploring the Serengeti with your guide. Depending on the season, you may be engulfed by vast herds of zebra and wildebeest as they attempt to cross the 395 km Mara River, which rises in central Kenya and pours into Lake Victoria. Its waters hide huge Nile crocodiles, lying silent and unseen, ready to strike.

Even so, the herds plunge in, knowing what awaits them but driven forward by the inescapable cycle of life, while lions and other predators bring down the weak and the old. The Serengeti is home to the Big Five and to the famous 'ugly five', and every drive brings fresh encounters.

Savour every moment with hearty meals and a second tranquil night at your camp in the African bush.

Day05Ngorongoro Crater and departure from Kilimanjaro International Airport Breakfast & lunch

After breakfast at around 08:00, leave the Serengeti with a game drive en route from the central plains to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here you descend 610 m into the world's largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera – a natural sanctuary teeming with wildlife.

Explore the 260 sq km crater floor, framed by steep walls dotted with tumbling rocks. The salty Lake Magadi (Makat) attracts excellent birdlife, and the crater is home to the Big Five, as well as large pods of hippos, gazelles and other antelopes. Our highly trained driver-guides – our 'search engines' – know exactly where to look, and you may hear the deep, booming call of the ostrich, the world's largest, fastest and strongest flightless bird.

After a picnic lunch on the crater floor, climb back out and continue by road to Kilimanjaro International Airport in time for your onward international flight home (transfer timing depends on your flight schedule).

Everyone at Gip Adventure Tours & Safaris wishes you a safe journey home, carrying memories of your honeymoon that will last a lifetime.
