Mount Meru Trek Expedition

Mount Meru

Tour Overview

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of the most visually stunning volcanoes in all of Africa. Towering to an elevation of 4,566m (14,980ft), this dormant stratovolcano serves as the majestic topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Located in the northern Tanzania Arusha region, just 70km from the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a unique and intimate mountain experience. It is not merely a climb, but a profound journey through diverse ecosystems, acting as the life-giving source of the Pangani Basin and home to some of the most dramatic, sheer vertical cliffs found on the entire continent.

The mountain’s geological history is as fascinating as its beauty; it is a remnant of a massive prehistoric eruption that collapsed its eastern flank, creating the horseshoe-shaped crater we see today. The last minor volcanic activity was recorded in 1877, leaving behind the spectacular Ash Cone—a near-perfect volcanic cone rising from the crater floor. First ascended by Fritz Jaeger in 1904, the mountain has since become a sanctuary for trekkers who crave a rugged, wildlife-heavy, and less crowded alternative to the high-traffic trails of Kilimanjaro.

When you choose to conquer this peak with the Gip Adventure Team, you are choosing an expedition that blends high-altitude mountaineering with a true safari experience. As you ascend, you will traverse through a lush, primary montane forest teeming with biodiversity, transition into the rugged alpine desert, and finally stand atop the jagged, rocky rim of Socialist Peak. Throughout your journey, the Gip Adventure Team prioritizes your safety and acclimatization, ensuring that you have the time to witness the extraordinary views of the Momela Lakes, the sprawling savanna, and the ever-present silhouette of Kilimanjaro across the horizon. Whether you are navigating the dense forest trails in search of thumb-less colobus monkeys or watching the sunrise illuminate the sheer crater walls, this expedition promises a transformative adventure that will remain a cornerstone of your mountaineering memories.

Distance: 13km / 8.1miles | Time: ±6–7 hours | Habitat: Montane Forest to Moorland

On this accelerated schedule, you bypass the overnight stay at Miriakamba and push directly toward the high-altitude Saddle. The trek begins at Momela Gate, where your Gip Adventure Team guide will finalize park entry. You will immediately enter the lush, primary montane forest, a zone rich in biodiversity. Keep your eyes peeled for the resident mega-fauna, including savanna buffalo, giraffes, and the distinct, thumb-less colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy. As you climb higher, the dense green canopy thins into the open, rugged moorlands. You will arrive at the Saddle Accommodation Centre by late afternoon. This is a significant gain in elevation; we recommend spending your final daylight hours hydrating, resting, and preparing your gear for the impending midnight summit push.
