Meet the Big Five
Each of these five animals earned its place on the list the hard way — through the eyes of early big-game hunters who ranked them as the most dangerous and difficult to track on foot. Today, they're the centrepiece of nearly every Tanzania safari itinerary.
The Lion (Panthera leo)
The king of the savanna. You'll often find lions resting in the shade during the heat of the day, but they're most active during the cooler mornings and evenings, when hunts are more likely. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are world-renowned for their dense, healthy lion populations.
The African Leopard (Panthera pardus)
The masters of stealth. Leopards are the most elusive of the Big Five, and patience is everything. Keep your binoculars trained on the branches of large acacia trees — they love to haul their kills up high to protect them from scavengers like hyenas.
The African Elephant (Loxodonta africana)
The giants of the earth. Whether you're watching a herd cross the road in Tarangire or observing a family bathing in a waterhole, their intelligence and tight social bonds are deeply moving. Elephants are the most commonly spotted of the Big Five, especially around Tarangire's seasonal river.
The Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer)
Don't be fooled by their cow-like appearance. Cape buffalo are arguably the most dangerous of the five — incredibly resilient, powerful, and unpredictable when threatened. You'll typically see them in large herds grazing across open plains, often alongside other grazers.
The Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)
The rarest sight of all. Critically endangered, spotting a black rhino in the wild is a true privilege and the hardest checkbox to tick on a Big Five list. The Ngorongoro Crater serves as one of the best-protected habitats where these prehistoric creatures can still be observed in their natural state.
