Lake Chala: A One-Day Caldera Escape

Kilimanjaro Region

Tour Overview

Formed approximately 250,000 years ago by a dramatic volcanic blast, Lake Chala is a stunning, deep-blue caldera lake straddling the border between Tanzania and Kenya. Sitting at an elevation of 880m (2,887ft), this hidden jewel is fed entirely by groundwater filtered through the volcanic slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, taking roughly three months to travel from the mountain’s rainforests to the lakebed. With its steep crater rim rising 170m–200m (558ft–656ft) above the water, the lake offers a serene, almost mystical landscape that feels entirely removed from the outside world.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat or an active day of exploration, Lake Chala provides a unique biodiversity hotspot. From the endemic Chala Tilapia—a species found nowhere else on earth—to the rich variety of birds and primates that frequent the caldera walls, this site is a testament to the natural wonder of the Kilimanjaro region. The Gip Adventure Team invites you to experience this bewitchingly beautiful sanctuary, where you can immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the African wilderness.

Lake Chala Day Trip

Day to Day Itinerary

The Ultimate Lake Chala Immersion

Transit: 3–4 hours | On-Site: 5–6 hours | Total: Full Day Expedition | Region: Rombo District

Your day begins with a scenic drive toward the border, where you will branch off the main road onto the rugged tracks leading to the crater rim. Upon arrival, your Gip Adventure Team guide will lead you on a comprehensive walking safari along the Chala Savanna, which offers a breathtaking vantage point of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and the sprawling valley below. As you trek, you will encounter diverse flora, such as Marula and Fever trees, while keeping an eye out for local wildlife including baboons, blue monkeys, and the elusive dik-dik.

Following your walk, you will head down toward the water’s edge for a private canoeing session. Kayaking on the lake’s clear, turquoise waters while surrounded by towering, rocky caldera walls provides a unique perspective of the environment, offering a true “experience of a lifetime.” The day concludes with a gourmet picnic lunch at the campsite, where you can enjoy birdwatching—tracking raptors and waterfowls along the migration corridor—before your comfortable drive back, leaving you fully refreshed and immersed in one of Tanzania’s most unique landscapes.

Important Note

All Gip Adventure Team Lake Chala day trips include professional driver-guides, private 4WD transport, park entrance fees, and all meals (breakfast, lunch, and snacks). Please note that while the water is clear, swimming is generally discouraged due to the extreme depth and lack of traditional shores; we prioritize your safety throughout all water-based activities.

Amazing trip to Tanzania. Incredible climb to summit of Kilimanjaro. Gipson is an outstanding guide. He is extremely knowledgable about Kilimanjaro and all the mountain has to offer. I felt completely safe hiking daily. He is funny and put us at ease. I knew with 100% certainty that we would summit the mountain under Gipson’s guidance and care.

The best guide in Arusha We climbed Kilimanjaro with Gipson and want to climb Mount Meru with him as well. He is an amazing knowledgeable guide, very friendly, calm and fun. We trusted him completely making decisions on our health and regarding weather conditions. We are a family of 6 (all adults) and all had a great time.
