5-Day Uganda Safari (Kigali Start)

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Bwindi

Your expedition commences at Kigali International Airport, the most efficient gateway to the southwestern highlands of Uganda. After being warmly greeted by your private guide, you will embark on a spectacular 4–5 hour drive. As you cross the border into Uganda, the “Land of a Thousand Hills” gives way to the Kigezi Highlands, a dramatic landscape of steep, terraced mountains and deep, mist-filled valleys. The journey itself is an immersion into local life, as you pass through bustling rural villages and see the verdant hillsides meticulously cultivated by the local communities.

Arriving in the Rushaga or Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you are enveloped by the sounds of an ancient, prehistoric rainforest—a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Your evening is spent relaxing in your lodge, which is often nestled right on the edge of the forest, allowing you to fall asleep to the symphony of the jungle while preparing for the life-changing trek ahead.

The pinnacle of your safari begins at dawn. After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a mandatory briefing on the “dos and don’ts” of tracking these gentle giants. Accompanied by expert rangers and trackers who know every inch of the forest, you will venture into the dense, emerald canopy. The trek can be physically demanding as you navigate the rugged, uneven terrain, but the reward is unmatched: the moment you lock eyes with a silverback in the wild. You will spend one magical, silent hour observing the family as they forage, play, and interact, witnessing the profound human-like behavior that makes these creatures so captivating.

Once you emerge from the forest, you’ll begin the scenic drive toward the Kalinzu area of Queen Elizabeth National Park. As you descend from the high-altitude montane forest, the environment shifts dramatically, transitioning from misty, vertical slopes to the golden, expansive vistas of the Rift Valley floor. You will spend the evening in the heart of the savanna, listening to the wild rhythms of the bush as you settle into your lodge for the night.

Today, you explore the raw pulse of the savanna. You’ll head out on an early morning game drive across the Kasenyi Plains, where the sunrise illuminates the grasslands—prime territory for sighting lions, leopards, and herds of buffalo. With the Rwenzori Mountains (the fabled “Mountains of the Moon”) forming a jagged, dramatic backdrop, you’ll witness the rich biodiversity that defines this park. Whether you’re watching an elephant family cross your path or spotting a predator stalking through the kob-filled plains, the energy of the savanna is constant and captivating.

By midday, you’ll begin the journey toward Kibale National Park. As you travel through Western Uganda’s lush landscapes, you’ll pass through local markets and verdant tea plantations, transitioning into the tropical rainforest belt. Upon arrival in the Kibale region, you’ll settle into a lodge nestled near the forest edge, where the hum of the jungle provides a relaxing atmosphere to reflect on the day’s savanna sightings before your final primate encounter.

Kibale is widely recognized as the premier destination in Africa for chimpanzee tracking, home to over 1,500 of these highly intelligent primates. You’ll start your morning at the Kanyanchu Visitor Center for a briefing before heading deep into the forest. Guided by specialists, you’ll track the boisterous chimpanzee troops; hearing their powerful pant-hoots echoing through the trees before catching sight of them swinging effortlessly through the canopy is an exhilarating, high-speed experience that stands in stark, exciting contrast to the stillness of your gorilla encounter.

In the afternoon, you’ll explore the nearby Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lake region. These deep, turquoise-colored lakes, formed by ancient volcanic activity, offer a serene contrast to the morning’s energy. You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the crater rims, taking in panoramic views of the lush, rolling hills that characterize this volcanic landscape. It is the perfect opportunity to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and soak in the vibrant natural beauty of the “Pearl of Africa” before your final day.

As you navigate toward Entebbe International Airport (EBB), you’ll have time to savor the final views of the diverse landscape, passing through regional towns that offer a glimpse into the daily life of Uganda’s people.

You arrive at the airport with ample time for your international departure, carrying with you the profound memories of your encounter with Africa’s most iconic primates and the sweeping beauty of the Great Rift Valley.
