Ol Doinyo Lengai, famously known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is one of the most unique geological sites on Earth. Standing at 3,188m (10,460ft), this active stratovolcano is the only known volcano in the world to produce natrocarbonatite lava—a fascinating substance that is 50% cooler than other lava, flowing with a water-like viscosity at approximately 510°C (950°F). Located in the heart of the Gregory Rift Valley, this expedition with the Gip Adventure Team combines the thrill of a steep volcanic ascent with the surreal beauty of Lake Natron.
Lake Natron is an alkaline, soda-rich sanctuary and the primary breeding ground for 75% of the world’s Lesser Flamingo population. The lake’s vibrant red and orange hues, caused by salt-loving cyanobacteria, create a stark, alien landscape against the backdrop of the Great Rift Valley. This 5-day adventure is designed for the agile adventurer, taking you from the bustling town of Arusha through the heart of Maasai land to the most active volcanic site in East Africa.

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a representative from the Gip Adventure Team will meet you at the terminal and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha, a scenic 45-50 minute drive. This initial journey allows you to catch your first glimpse of the Tanzanian landscape and prepare for the rugged expedition ahead.
Once you have checked into your hotel, you will have the remainder of the day to relax and shed the fatigue of your long international flight. The Gip Adventure Team provides a comfortable environment for your first night, ensuring you are well-rested and prepared for the departure into the heart of Maasai land the following morning.
After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, you will be met by your Gip Adventure Team driver-guide and professional chef for the 5-hour drive to the Lake Natron region. En route, we will make a stop at the vibrant village of Mto wa Mbu, a cultural crossroads, before proceeding toward Lengai, where you will encounter large herds of game and bands of local Maasai people roaming the land.
We arrive in the afternoon at the scenic campsite located on the banks of the Engaresero River. This is the perfect spot to wash off the dust of the road in the cool river waters or take a short, refreshing trek to the hidden waterfalls tucked away in the western wall of the Great Rift Valley, offering a tranquil prelude to the volcanic climb.
Your summit attempt begins in the middle of the night with tea and cookies before driving to the base of the mountain. The trek to the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai is steep, challenging, and exhilarating; it typically takes 5–6 hours to reach the summit, where you will be rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of the volcanic landscape.
You will have 20–45 minutes at the top to photograph the crater and enjoy the vistas before beginning the 3–4 hour descent back to the base. Upon returning to the trailhead, you will be transferred back to the Gip Adventure Team camp for a well-earned hot lunch, followed by an afternoon dedicated to rest and recovery in the comfort of your tent.
After breakfast, we head to the shores of Lake Natron, the vital breeding hub for millions of Lesser Flamingos. You will witness firsthand the stark beauty of this caustic environment, where the water’s high alkalinity creates a unique ecosystem of deep reds and oranges, providing a perfect backdrop for nature photography.
Embarking back to the camp at midday, you will enjoy a hot lunch and collect your belongings before beginning the 4–5 hour drive back to Arusha. En route, we can opt for a cultural stop at a traditional Maasai Boma or visit the Meserani Snake Park for a moment with shy, rare reptile species before spending your final night in the city.
A delightful breakfast is served at the lodge at 08:00 AM. This morning provides a final opportunity to relax and reflect on your volcanic journey, ensuring you are fully rejuvenated before concluding your stay in Tanzania.
Depending on your flight schedule, you will be collected by your Gip Adventure Team driver and transferred comfortably by road to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward international flight back home. We ensure a seamless departure, marking the successful conclusion of your adventure to the “Mountain of God.”
Ol Doinyo Lengai is an unpredictable active volcano. The Gip Adventure Team prioritizes your safety above all else; our guides are trained to navigate the trail with extreme caution, avoiding the active northern crater and monitoring volcanic activity. Trekkers should be reasonably fit and agile, as the trail is very steep and demands steady footing. Always carry sufficient water to prevent dehydration, especially during the descent.
