Tour overview
Snakes, camels and Maasai culture at an oasis in the scrubland.
Meserani Snake Park began as a campsite on dry scrubland just outside Arusha, set up by a South African couple. It has since grown into a remarkable site for local and international visitors alike. Barry and Lynn Bale bought the land in 1993, and through careful planting of native and introduced trees and other plants, and a great deal of hard work, they turned it into a true oasis in the desert. The park lies 25 km west of Arusha along the Arusha–Dodoma road.
The site combines a large reptile collection with Maasai culture. Guided tours of the snake park introduce some of the world's deadliest and most venomous snakes, and you can handle certain snakes and crocodiles yourself, such as the rufous-beaked snake. There is also wildlife to look out for, including birds of prey, guineafowl and reptiles. The Maasai Culture Museum is led by a Maasai warrior, and there are short camel rides into the Maasai land and an atmospheric bar.
The campsite is a favourite with independent travellers, overland truck groups, local visitors, students and international guests. If you're passionate about reptiles, this is the place for you.

Day01Meserani Snake Park, Maasai Culture Museum and camel rides
Your guide collects you in Arusha, Moshi or at KIA and drives you west along the Arusha–Dodoma road to Meserani Snake Park, 25 km from Arusha. Start with a guided tour of the snake park and its large reptile collection. Learn about some of the deadliest and most venomous snakes in Africa, see the crocodiles, and, if you dare, handle certain snakes and crocodiles yourself, such as the rufous-beaked snake. Keep an eye out for birds of prey, guineafowl and other wildlife in the grounds.
Next, a Maasai warrior guides you through the Maasai Culture Museum, explaining the Maasai way of life, body modification, dress and social organisation. You will also get the chance to dress in traditional Maasai style. Then climb aboard a camel for a 5–10 minute ride into the Maasai land, a highlight of the day and a great photo opportunity.
After lunch, explore the leafy campsite, used by overland groups and independent travellers from across East Africa, and relax with a cold drink at the atmospheric bar before returning to your pick-up point.
