Tour overview

The art, crafts and gemstones of a nation of 120 tribes.

Arusha has plenty to see both in town and in the surrounding countryside, and the Cultural Heritage Centre is one of its most striking sights. It lies on the outskirts of the city, about 2 km from the centre along the main Arusha–Dodoma road.

The complex combines an African art gallery, a precious stone and jewellery shop, and a restaurant serving dishes from around the world. It brings together the past and present of Tanzania's 120 tribes on one site, almost under one roof, with carvings, gemstones, artefacts, clothing and books on display.

The centre has welcomed some of the world's best-known statesmen, including Thabo and Zanele Mbeki of South Africa, King Harald, Queen Sonja and Princess Märtha Louise of Norway, and US Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. It is an easy, rewarding visit to combine with a day in Arusha.
