Tour overview
Mount Meru's wild garden, from crater rainforest to the Mini Serengeti.
Arusha National Park lies just a few kilometres north-east of Arusha city, with its main gate 25 km east of the city, 58 km from Moshi and 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport. It is home to Mount Meru, a striking 4,566 m volcano and Tanzania's second-highest peak, just 60 km from Kilimanjaro, which forms a backdrop to the east. The park lies on a 300 km line of Africa's most famous parks, from the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in the west to Kilimanjaro National Park in the east.
The park is small but varied, with spectacular scenery in three distinct areas. In the west, Meru Crater funnels the Jekukumia River, with Meru's summit on its rim. In the south-east, Ngurdoto Crater is a bowl of grassland. In the north-east, the shallow alkaline Momella Lakes change colour with their algae and are famous for wading birds. The park is rich in plants and animals.
In one day you can combine game drives with guided walks, canoeing or horse riding, and visit the Mini Serengeti, the Kilimanjaro viewpoint, Lake Longil, the Mikindu viewpoint over Ngurdoto Crater, Uwanja wa Mbogo, the Ngurdoto Museum, the Cave Waterfall, the Fig Tree Arch and Tululusia Waterfall.

Day01Arusha National Park game drive and walks
Your guide collects you in Arusha, Moshi or at KIA and drives you to the park gate, 25 km east of Arusha. Enter the park for a morning game drive across the Mini Serengeti, known locally as Serengeti Ndogo. On this open grassland, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, waterbucks and several primate species come to graze. Continue to Ngurdoto Crater and the Mikindu viewpoint, one of six lookouts over the crater. It is a man-made clearing in the Ngurdoto rainforest on the south-western rim and one of the most visited, as it is safe and easy to reach. Stop at Uwanja wa Mbogo and the Ngurdoto Museum along the way.
Head north-east to the Momella Lakes, shallow alkaline lakes whose colours change with their algae and which attract many wading birds. Nearby Lake Longil is different, holding fresh water rather than alkaline. Lunch is at the Kilimanjaro viewpoint, a beautiful picnic site on the slopes of Mount Meru with views of Kilimanjaro on clear days.
In the afternoon, choose how to explore further: a guided walk to the Fig Tree Arch, the Cave Waterfall or Tululusia Waterfall, canoeing, or horse riding. Then enjoy a last game drive on your way out of the park before returning to your pick-up point.
