Chimpanzee Trekking
Follow expert trackers through the forest to spend time with habituated chimpanzees in their natural home.
Tanzania National Parks
Lush forest rising from the shores of Lake Tanganyika, home to the chimpanzees made famous by Jane Goodall, makes Gombe one of the most intimate wildlife experiences in Africa.
Discover Gombe
Set at an altitude of 68 to 1,524 metres, Gombe Stream National Park is one of the smallest parks in Tanzania, with an area of about 56 km². Established in 1968, it lies about 16 km north of Kigoma town in the northwestern corner of the country and can only be reached by boat.
This world-famous park, known for its population of chimpanzees, was gazetted to protect the Gombe ecosystem, its habitats, its biodiversity and its chimpanzees. It lies within the Rift Valley and borders Lake Tanganyika to the west, offering a rare combination of forest trekking and lakeside relaxation.
Why Gombe
Remote and less visited, Gombe offers plenty of attractions in a very small, beautiful space.
Follow expert trackers through the forest to spend time with habituated chimpanzees in their natural home.
Walk in the footsteps of the world's longest-running study of wild chimpanzees, begun by Jane Goodall in 1960.

Location
Gombe lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, about 16 km north of Kigoma town in western Tanzania. Visitors fly or travel overland to Kigoma, then take a boat along the lakeshore to the park, a journey of about one to two hours depending on the boat.
Kigoma is also a historic town: at nearby Ujiji, Henry Morton Stanley famously met Dr David Livingstone in 1871, greeting him with the words Dr Livingstone, I presume? Lake Tanganyika straddles the borders of Tanzania, the DRC, Zambia and Burundi.

Explore the area
Gombe is divided into four zones, each with its own character.
Wildlife
The chimpanzees are Gombe's star attraction, but the park is home to many other primates, including olive baboons, red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys. Mixed woodland, miombo and grassland support a wealth of plants and wildlife.
More than 200 bird species have been recorded, from palm-nut vultures and fish eagles over the lake to colourful forest birds. Bushpigs, bushbuck and the occasional leopard also live in the forest.

Gombe's chimpanzees are among the most studied animals on Earth, and many have names and family histories going back decades. Watching them in their forest home is a profound and unforgettable experience.
