Tanzania National Parks
An evergreen island of rainforest, sandy beaches and quiet bays in Lake Victoria, home to chimpanzees, sitatunga antelope and countless fish eagles.
Discover Rubondo
Rubondo Island National Park was established in 1977 and covers 457 km², of which the main island makes up 240 km². It also protects 11 smaller islets, none much larger than 2 km². The island lies about 150 km west of Mwanza in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria.
The main island measures 28 km from north to south and 10 km wide. Closed-canopy lowland forest covers about 80% of the island, with acacia woodland, grassland, rocky areas and sandy beaches creating a pleasant climate, with temperatures rarely falling outside 20 to 25°C.

Location
Rubondo lies in the southwestern part of Lake Victoria, about 150 km west of Mwanza. It can be reached by boat from the mainland or by charter flight to the island's airstrip.
Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa by area, surrounds the island. Swimming is reputedly safe at the beaches in front of the lodge and camp, as the area is free of bilharzia, but crocodiles occasionally pass, so care is always needed.

An Island Safari
Rubondo is best explored slowly: walk forest trails in search of chimpanzees, glide around the shoreline by boat watching fish eagles and hippos, or try catch-and-release fishing for the legendary Nile perch.
With so few visitors, the island feels like a private sanctuary in the middle of Africa's largest lake.

It became a national park in 1977, protecting the island's forests, swamps and wildlife. Today it remains one of Tanzania's most peaceful and least visited parks.
