Discover Moshi

Base camp for the Roof of Africa.

Moshi is a compact, relaxed town on the lower southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the capital of the Kilimanjaro Region. It is the main base for climbers, with the gates for the Machame, Marangu, Umbwe and other routes within easy reach, and many trekkers spend a night or two here before and after their climb.

The town is known for being clean, safe and easy-going, with a lively central market, small cafes serving local coffee and a mix of Chagga, Pare, Maasai and many other communities. Above Moshi, the fertile slopes of the mountain are covered with the banana and coffee gardens of the Chagga people.

Moshi is also an excellent base for day trips: coffee tours and waterfall hikes in Materuni and Marangu, swimming in the Kikuletwa (Chemka) hot springs, or a visit to the crater lake of Chala on the Kenyan border.

Heritage

History and Chagga culture.

The southern slopes of Kilimanjaro have long been home to the Chagga people, skilled farmers who developed an ingenious system of irrigation channels and home gardens mixing bananas, coffee and vegetables. During times of conflict between chiefdoms, some Chagga communities dug underground tunnels for refuge, which can still be visited around Marangu.

Coffee arrived with missionaries in the late 19th century, and Chagga farmers went on to form one of the earliest African coffee cooperatives. Moshi grew as a trading and administrative town during the German and British colonial periods, helped by the railway connecting it to the coast.

Today Moshi is known across East Africa as the home of Kilimanjaro climbing, and many of the guides and porters who lead climbers to the summit come from the villages above the town.
