Discover Kisumu

Kenya's city on the lake.

Kisumu is one of Kenya's most important cities, alongside Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru, and the leading city of the west. It sits on the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, and has long been a port and trading centre for the lake region.

Kenya's road and railway network links Kisumu with Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa, and continues towards neighbouring Uganda, while Kisumu International Airport connects the city with the rest of the country. This makes it a natural stopping point for travellers moving between Kenya's parks and Uganda's gorilla and chimpanzee forests.

The city has a laid-back, friendly atmosphere, with lakeside fish restaurants, busy markets and a strong Luo cultural identity. Boat trips to see hippos, sunsets over the water and visits to nearby rock formations and islands make it a rewarding stop on a journey through western Kenya.

Heritage

The story behind Kisumu.

Kisumu has long been a trading and fishing centre on Lake Victoria. In 1901 the Uganda Railway reached the lakeshore here, and the town, then known as Port Florence, became the railway's terminus and a key port linking Kenya with Uganda and Tanzania by steamer.

Today Kisumu is a centre of Luo culture, known for its music, fishing traditions and warm hospitality. The surrounding region is also linked to the family of former US President Barack Obama, whose father came from the area, and the lake remains at the heart of local life and livelihoods.
