Travel Insurance
Why travel insurance is required for every trip, what your policy must cover, Kilimanjaro altitude cover, and the compulsory government insurance for Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.
Travel insurance is a condition of booking with us. It protects you, your trip and your money if the unexpected happens, from a cancelled flight to an illness in a remote park.
What your policy must cover
- medical treatment for accidents and illness;
- emergency medical evacuation, including by air from remote parks;
- personal accident and personal liability;
- cancellation and curtailment (cutting your trip short);
- loss of, damage to or delay of baggage and valuables;
- COVID-19 and other illness-related cancellation and treatment.
Climbing Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru
Standard policies often exclude trekking above a certain altitude. Make sure yours covers trekking up to 6,000 metres (Kilimanjaro's summit is 5,895 metres) and helicopter rescue and evacuation from the mountain.
Compulsory government insurance
- Zanzibar requires all international visitors to buy its own inbound travel insurance, on top of their personal policy. It is bought online before arrival through the Zanzibar government's official visitor website.
- Mainland Tanzania published regulations in September 2026 for a similar compulsory inbound insurance for foreign visitors (US$44, valid for up to 92 days). Citizens of East African Community and SADC countries are exempt. The start date and how to buy it are still being confirmed.
These government policies cover basic emergency care and evacuation within Tanzania only. They do not replace your own travel insurance. We send you the latest requirements and links with your travel documents.
When to buy
Buy your insurance as soon as you pay your deposit, so you are covered for cancellation from the start. Keep your policy number and emergency phone number with your passport and share them with us before you travel.
