Safety & Security
How safe Tanzania is for travellers, common-sense tips in towns, safety around wildlife and what we do to keep you safe.
Tanzania is a peaceful, politically stable country and one of the safest places in Africa to travel. Tanzanians are warm and welcoming, and most visitors never experience any problem. As anywhere in the world, a little common sense goes a long way.
In towns and cities
- Use the safe in your room for passports, cash and valuables.
- Do not walk alone at night; take a taxi arranged by your hotel or our team.
- Keep phones and cameras out of sight in busy markets and bus stations.
- Carry a copy of your passport and leave the original in the safe when you can.
- Politely ignore street sellers and unofficial "guides" offering safaris or climbs; book only with licensed operators.
On safari
National parks and many lodges and camps are unfenced, so animals move freely. Serious incidents are very rare when you follow a few rules:
- stay in the vehicle unless your guide says it is safe to get out;
- never feed, touch or approach wild animals, however calm they look;
- after dark, always ask for an escort between your room and the main area;
- keep children close and supervised at all times;
- keep your tent or room zipped or locked, and food out of reach of monkeys and baboons.
On the beach
- Swim where hotels recommend, and watch for tides and currents, especially on the east coast of Zanzibar.
- Book boat trips and snorkelling through your hotel or our team, with licensed operators and life jackets.
How we keep you safe
- Experienced, licensed driver-guides and mountain guides with first-aid training.
- Vehicles checked by our mechanics before and after every safari.
- Radios in our safari vehicles, and our office team on WhatsApp throughout your trip.
- Daily health checks on Kilimanjaro, with emergency oxygen and evacuation plans.
We also recommend checking your own government's travel advice before you travel and holding full travel insurance.
