Getting There & Around
International airports, domestic and bush flights, road travel on safari, ferries to Zanzibar and crossing between Tanzania and Kenya.
Getting to East Africa is easier than many people expect, and once you arrive we look after every transfer, flight and drive on your itinerary.
Which airport?
| Airport | Best for |
|---|---|
| Kilimanjaro International (JRO) | Arusha, Moshi, Kilimanjaro and the northern safari parks |
| Julius Nyerere International, Dar es Salaam (DAR) | The southern parks (Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi) and the coast |
| Abeid Amani Karume International, Zanzibar (ZNZ) | Zanzibar beach holidays |
| Jomo Kenyatta International, Nairobi (NBO) | Kenya safaris, and sometimes cheaper flights for northern Tanzania |
| Entebbe International (EBB) or Kigali (KGL) | Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda |
Airlines flying into Tanzania include Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, KLM, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways, as well as Air Tanzania.
On safari
Most safaris travel by road in a 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, a window seat for everyone and a professional driver-guide. Distances are long and many park roads are gravel, so we plan time in fewer parks rather than rushing between many. We strongly advise against self-driving: roads, wildlife and park rules make a local driver-guide far safer and more rewarding.
Domestic and bush flights
Scheduled flights link Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar with airstrips across the Serengeti, Ruaha, Nyerere, Katavi and Mahale. Operators include Air Tanzania, Precision Air, Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, Regional Air and Air Excel. Flying saves long drives on a fly-in safari, but luggage is limited to about 15 kg in a soft bag.
Zanzibar by sea
Fast ferries run several times a day between Dar es Salaam and Stone Town; the crossing takes about two hours. Short flights from Arusha and Dar es Salaam are the quickest way to reach the island after a safari.
Crossing between Tanzania and Kenya
The main road crossing is at Namanga, on the road between Arusha and Nairobi (about five to six hours' drive). Others are Holili (near Moshi and Tsavo), Isebania (Sirari) near the Masai Mara, and Lunga Lunga on the coast. You will need visas for both countries.
In the cities
Taxis are available in the towns, but quality varies; your hotel or our team can arrange a reliable driver. Local minibuses (daladala) are crowded and not recommended for visitors with luggage.
